Köln-Deutz, Germany.

Location: Köln-Deutz, Germany
Company: ?
Architect: H. Baumann
Erected: 1959

One of the early 50ties stations preserved in Cologne, is situated at the Deutz-Kalkerstrasse. A nice example of reconstruction architecture after WW II. Look at the white color, but especially the slim, trapeziumshaped concrete canopy. Large cantilevering over the kiosk. Really compatible with the "reconstruction-atmosphere" in Germany those days. The city of Cologne has a real good eye for preserving architecture like this. There must be more stations of this kind here, however I only know these from publications.

Wolfsburg, Germany.

Location: Wolfsburg, Germany
Company: Esso
Architect: H.F. Behrens
Erected: 1952

On this visible location at the Siemens- and Braunschweiger Strasse the city of Wolfsburg desired a high qualified station architecture. The result was a highly elegant petrol station, inspired by aircraft technology. Again, in the 90ties, it became a monument because of the same reason. The location was restored and adapted to modern standards. The concrete canopy has rounded edges, just as the second, later adapted one at the back. Together with the added carwash and shop extension, the modern parts were carefully designed. Lighting was very modern those days. A neon rim along the canopy, and separate shaped letters forming the Esso-logo on top. I never saw the station myself...

Geneva, Switzerland.

Location: Geneva, Switzerland
Company: ?
Architect: Braillard, Maillard.
Erected: 1936

One of the Bauhaus-style period petrol stations. High-profile situated at the Montbrillant road, the main traffic artery towards Paris. The station is a real landmark in the city scape, and for the traffic flow. Formally and symmetric, it is from a period that architects were still finding out their way of shaping this new type of building.

The dynamic of the apparently cantilevered concrete roof (but it's supported by steel columns in the glass kiosk below) stands for progressive ideas and modern techniques. I only know the station from publications.

Pettenasco (Lago d'Orta), Italy.

Location: Pettenasco (Lago d'Orta), Italy
Company: Q8
Architect: ?
Erected: ?

A very good preserved fillingpoint close to the lake Orta. There are many Bauhous characteristics included in the architecture. Like the white color, the slim cantilevered concrete roof, and the glass kiosk. The carwash hall is probably a former grease station. The small shop is adequate for the Pettenasco village consumers.
Q8 was careful in the use of its logomarks. Only the big roadsign is unacceptable, the other logos are not irritating. I hope for a long commercial life for this nice old selling point....

St. Maurizio (Lago d'Orta), Italy.

Location: St. Maurizio (Lago d'Orta), Italy
Company: ?
Architect: ?
Erected: ?

This station contains clear characteristics of prewar modern architecture. The small white building contains a concrete central awning, cantilevering from the frontside, and beared by two columns.
A glass rounded kiosk under it. On both sides of the symmetric structure are overhead doors leading to the car service area behind.
Nowadays it's in desolate condition, but still recognisable as a great design of the past. At the roof there's an extra floor added, in rough masonry, covered by a pyramid shaped tiled roof. This denying of the basement architecture looks abandoned. I removed it from the picture to express the original situation. The pumps were removed long ago. It's my fear that if renovation resumes one day, the last remains will become unrecognisable.

Omegna (Lago d'Orta), Italy.

Location: Omegna (Lago d'Orta), Italy
Company: Esso
Architect: ?
Erected: ?

This Esso station in pre-war style is still existing and in use. It's difficult to predict its age. There are some Bauhaus characteristics, like the rounded building corners, the crème plastering, and concrete awning under the roof edge.
The recently added, modern Esso canopy (removed from the picture) is annoying. But it's still situated in the center of the symmetrical building. The large shop with glass front is right behind it, neighbored by a grease hall and an office/owner's house.

Filling station ERG Italy.

.

.

Location: ???, Italy
Company: ERG
Architect: ?
Erected: ?

ERG is one of these Italian companies that used to own real beautiful shaped petrol stations in the past. I do not know if and where the nice modern shaped station in pre-war style on the picture is still existing. The photo was shot long ago. I got it from the ERG website.
